The Language Of Heaven

(Full disclosure, these musings are not intended to be a theological treatise.)

I wish the Tower of Babel never existed. On our first trip to Guatemala we were with missionaries who could communicate with the nationals for us without a problem. On my second trip, three of us went to the mission’s annual conference, and at times we were without the benefit of a translator. That’s when I despised the Tower of Babel. If God hadn’t confounded the languages, we could communicate with others regardless of nationality. After being alone with our host for a period of time and only being able to smile, I vowed that I wouldn’t return until I learned some Spanish.

To shorten the story, the Church of Genesis provided me with the opportunity to study Spanish at the university level, with tuition, time to attend classes, and encouragement. I’m not fluent but can converse with Guatemalans and Nicaraguan friends who still  stay in touch nearly weekly. I will be forever grateful to the church for that. Not so grateful for the Tower of Babel.

Today I was sitting on our porch enjoying the warm weather doing some praying and meditating and even an occasional doze (I won’t lie). I listened to birds calling to each other from garage roof to the trees, and how they answered back and forth. It made me wonder about bird languages. Each species has their own unique language.

My thoughts centered on heaven. I pondered how heaven will be. How we will all speak the same language. Perfect communication. We won’t need translators. Who knows, we might even communicate with the birds? The heavenly language will be something. I wonder what it will sound like. I doubt that it will be English!

Paradise was lost when Adam sinned. Paradise will be renewed in our heavenly home. It’s going to be great!
